This form is used when verbal interesting is the action itself rather than the result, no action is required if completed or not (the action started in the past and may have just finished or even continue).


I have been reading a book (shoulder what I've been doing, did not say whether I finished the book or not)
This time is also used to indicate the duration of an action that began in the past (and just completed or still ongoing).


I have been playing tennis for two hours

I have been waiting for him for 1 hour (maybe the other person just arrived and I still continue to wait, the context will determine one way or another)

The use of this time indicates that the transmitter considers that the duration was long.
